Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Psychologist?

Psychologists are experts in human behaviour and are knowledgeable in the way people think, feel and act.  They apply a range of techniques in therapy to alleviate distress and optimise emotional wellbeing. Psychologists can assist people who are experiencing mental health problems or disturbances of thoughts, feelings and behaviour. Psychologists do not prescribe medication.

Psychologists have a minimum of four years university education and training. They are legally required to register with the psychologist registration board of their state. This also means that they must adhere to ethical guidelines and a strict code of conduct.

How long does therapy take?

The duration of therapy really depends upon your personal circumstances and the nature of your concerns.  Typically, psychological problems require numerous sessions over an extended period of time. Mild level issues can often be resolved in 8 to 10 sessions. Medicare provide a rebate for up to 10 sessions per calender year.

What can I expect?

During the initial consultation we will endeavour to identify your concerns and establish your individual therapeutic needs. In order to provide an informed and relevant service, this will involve you being asked a number of questions and providing a detailed history. The completion of brief assessment instruments may also be required. The psychologist will then provide you with their professional understanding of your issues and may recommend specific therapeutic intervention. This session is also an opportunity for you to ask questions, and to express your views and preferences in treatment. Typically, subsequent appointments are arranged, at which time intervention may commence in more detail.

Is my information private?

All information gathered by a psychologist will remain confidential and secure. In special circumstances there are exceptions to confidentiality, such as if you or another individual are at risk, or if information is legally subpoenaed.
